Testing the MPA Tiles

Each MPA Tile can be tested for basic functionality independently of a host or network. Some tiles can also be set to an extended test mode to check active widget elements like motor faders or RGB LEDs. Both the basic test and the extended test mode can be performed with single tiles, but also with tiles in a Tile Chain.

Basic function test using the status LED

There is a green status LED on the underside of each MPA Tile (not to be confused with the red power LED). The status LED must and may only light up when operating actions are performed on the tile which trigger events. This is explained in detail below for the different types of tiles.

Motorfader Tile

In the following figure you can see the green status LED on a 4-motorfader tile in the lower right area of the board:

For each of the following operating actions on any fader, the status LED must blink briefly: Touching and releasing (Touched/Untouched)

  • Move up and down (Updated)
  • Note: When moving the faders, "Updated" events are triggered in quick succession, so that the status LED may flash like a stroboscope.

RGB LED Button Tile

At the RGB-LED Button-Tile (8 Buttons) the Status-LED is located quite in the middle, directly next to the ARM chip:

With the buttons there are not many different actions: When pressing and releasing (Pressed/Released) any button, the status LED must flash briefly.

Encoder Tile (rotary knobs)

The status LED can be found on the encoder tile (8 encoders) near the USB port:

For each of the following operating actions on any encoder, the status LED must flash briefly:

  • Touching and releasing (Touched/Untouched)
  • Press and release (Pressed/Released)
  • Turn left and right (Turn left/Turn right) - at each step of the grid (if there is a grid)

Extended test mode

How the extended test mode can be activated depends on the type of MPA Tile and is described below

Motorfader Tile

  1. Disconnect the motorfader tile from the power supply
  2. All faders must be set to maximum (at the top)
  3. Restore power supply and wait about 1 second
  4. Within 10 seconds of switching on, touch all faders simultaneously without moving them
  5. Result: All faders start to run through a simple animation pattern over their entire length, slightly offset in time
  6. If a fader is touched after the animation has started, it interrupts its animation and can be moved freely. After releasing, it resumes the animation.
  7. To end the extended test mode, the power supply must be disconnected again.

RGB LED Button Tile

  1. Disconnect the Tile button from the power supply
  2. Press and hold any button on the tile while restoring power
  3. Result: All buttons light up; each row in different colors.
    • Tile with 12 buttons: 1st row red, 2nd row green, 3rd row blue
    • Tile with 8 buttons: 1st row yellow, 2nd row blue
  4. When a button is pressed, it changes its color or brightness and goes through the following cycle:
    • Dull Red, Half Red, Full Red
    • Dull Yellow, Half Yellow, Full Yellow
    • Dull Green, Half Green, Full Green
    • Dull Blue, Half Blue, Full Blue
    • Dull White, Half White, Full White
    • Off
  5. To end the test mode, the power supply must be disconnected again.

Encoder Tile

The Encoder Tiles do not offer an extended test mode, as they do not have any active elements that could provide mechanical or optical feedback.

Evaluation

If an MPA Tile does not react as described during testing, there is a problem that needs to be investigated further. See Troubleshooting.
